Ciprofloxacin is used to treat or prevent certain infections caused by bacteria. It is prescribed for the treatment of pneumonia, gonorrhoea (a sexually transmitted disease), typhoid fever (a serious infection that is common in developing countries), infectious diarrhoea (infections that cause severe diarrhoea), and infections of the skin, bone, joint, abdomen (stomach area), and prostate (male reproductive gland).
Ciprofloxacin contains an antibiotic, 'Ciprofloxacin', which is bactericidal in nature and works by killing bacteria that cause infections. It prevents the division of bacterial cells. It also inhibits the repair of bacterial cells. Altogether, it kills the bacteria.
Ciprofloxacin should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. In some cases, you may experience nausea, diarrhoea, abnormal liver function tests, vomiting, and rash. Most of these side effects of Ciprofloxacin do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects are persistent, reach out to your doctor.
It is not advisable to stop this medicine suddenly to avoid unpleasant side effects. Inform your doctor if you have any lung disease, muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis), sleeping disorder or difficulty in sleeping (sleep apnoea), severe liver disease, or problem with alcohol or other prescription recreational drugs. Inform your doctor if you are planning to get pregnant, are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling, shortness of breath, etc. you should contact a doctor immediately.

Ciprofloxacin is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infections, urinary tract infections, genital tract infections, stomach infections, infections of bones and joints and skin and soft tissue infections. It can also be used in the management of patients with anthrax inhalation exposure.
Ciprofloxacin: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
Ciprofloxacinworks by blocking the actions of certain bacterial proteins (such as DNA gyrase, topoisomerase IV) which is essential for the bacteria to survive. As a result, it destroys the susceptible bacteria and prevent their further growth and multiplication within the body which helps in reducing the severity of the infection.
Consult your doctor if you experience:
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic (antibiotic) that works by blocking the action of the bacterial enzyme fluoroquinolone (KI). When the bacteria become resistant to previous treatments, the KI enzyme is activated and eventually the body starts to harbor the ability to produce (Ex. on the skin, vagina, brain etc.). This makes the bacteria more sensitive to other treatments. Ciprofloxacin stops bacteria from multiplying and therefore enhances the effectiveness of older treatments and prevents bacteria from growing and multiplying.
Standard dosage:
Ciprofloxacin can be taken with or without food. It is usually taken orally.
Most people who experience symptoms after taking Ciprofloxacin find that it is generally well-tolerated standard of care, with limited side effects. In general, the symptoms of infection usually subside as the infection is treated.
Usage Directions:
Some people find that Ciprofloxacin does not work for them at all. This is due to the fact that the antibiotic stops bacteria from growing and multiplying which helps in reducing the severity of the infection.

A new study suggests the common ear drops that contain Ciprofloxacin may have fewer side effects than those that don’t contain the drug.
The study, published Monday in theNew England Journal of Medicine, was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicineby the same journal.
In a separate study, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia conducted a large, double-blind, randomized trial comparing Ciprofloxacin and placebo for treating otitis externa.
In the trial, the researchers looked at 79 ears of 29 patients who had been treated with either Ciprofloxacin (30 mg) or placebo for five days and then again for a week and then again for five more days.
They looked at symptoms that could be signs of a new ear infection, including inflammation, redness, swelling, and even a burning sensation.
All of the patients had a history of ear pain or infection before treatment began.
The study was presented at the American Society of Otolaryngology Pain (ASOP) annual meeting in San Francisco. The researchers also asked about side effects, including side effects of the drugs and side effects of the placebo.
The results showed that the two drugs had similar pain-relief scores in both groups.
The researchers noted that although the dropout rate was similar, the dropout rates in the two groups were about 1.5% and 3%, respectively.
“This is the first time that we have shown that Ciprofloxacin drops can be a useful treatment option for patients with otitis externa,” said lead author Dr. James B. Cooper, associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “We believe that this study is the first proof of concept that a topical solution of Ciprofloxacin drops can be a useful treatment option for patients with otitis externa.”
The two studies also examined a single dose of Ciprofloxacin in patients with otitis externa with associated hearing loss. Researchers compared the drops with placebo and found that they reduced pain and inflammation, as well as increased healing of the external ear.
The researchers noted that the patients who reported hearing pain and inflammation in the lab had a median decrease of 6.9 days in pain from the dropout.
“There were no significant differences between the two groups in any of the other side effects,” said Dr. David R. Bresch, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco who was not involved in the study.
Dr. Steven E. Levy, a spokesman for Pfizer Inc., said the new study does not provide evidence that Ciprofloxacin is superior to placebo for treating otitis externa, and that he is concerned about side effects of the drugs and the side effects of the placebo.
“The new study does not support the use of Ciprofloxacin drops for otitis externa, but the evidence for this is still strong,” he said.
Ciprofloxacin is available as a suspension of 100 mg/mL. The drops can be used to treat the condition in which the hearing loss is most likely to occur.
The study was funded by a grant from Pfizer, which is in the process of developing new drug candidates for use in the U. S.
The research was conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and the University of therito humanoctor at the University of Pennsylvania.
Cooper, who was not involved in the study, is a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
He said the two studies “demonstrate the benefits of using topical Ciprofloxacin drops, which can help reduce pain and inflammation but do not address the other side effects of Ciprofloxacin.”
The study is published online May 17.
The University of Pennsylvania
A University of Pennsylvania study of otitis externa patients is available online May 16.
In the study, the study patients received either 50 or 100 micrograms (mg) of Ciprofloxacin in a four-hour time-duration, twice-daily regimen. Patients had a pain score of 15 or above.
The drops were applied to the ear three times a week.
